Abstract

Steve James's Reel Paradise and Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayisi's Sisters in Lawexemplify divergent paths in the field of ethnographic documentary since 1922's formative Nanook of the North. The observational style of Sisters in Law bests the self-indulgence of Reel Paradise, though both films present ethical challenges.
