Abstract

This chapter is a critical survey of colonial France, of the particular formation of colonies à la française. It examines the insertion of France, French people, institutions, and ideas into different parts of the globe, a curious phenomenon indeed given the contradictions and hesitations, the slowing down as well as the quickening of events that unfolded. Today, more than a half-century after the official fall of the French empire in the 1960s, can one speak of postcolonial France and of a country restricted to its natural geographic borders?
