Bilingualism, supervision of social workers

Abstract

This study is a phenomenological exploration of the experiences of bilingual social workers in the supervision of their work with Spanish-English bilingual or Limited English Proficiency clients. Interviews were conducted with 17 bilingual social workers recruited in Fairfield and New Haven county, New London and Hartford Connecticut area. Thematic analysis of the data revealed eight themes. These themes were: the value of supervision; the effect of first language differences on supervision; issues addressed and not addressed in supervision; relational dynamics and supervision; supervision, language switching, and mixing; challenges of documenting first language in the second language; supervision and clinical terminology; and MSW preparation to do therapy in a different language. Subthemes were identified within each theme. Limitations of the study were described. Implications of the findings for practice, future research, educational and policy were drawn.
