Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study was to add to the depth and complexity of working cross-culturally in the mental health field. The study utilized participant responses from an online clinical training to understand how clinicians grapple with and come to understand cultural humility in clinical practice. Data was derived from qualitative, open-ended textual responses to case vignettes presented in video format to 170 enrolled training participants, who provide mental health services to families. Four themes of cultural humility, identified in the literature, provided a helpful frame for understanding some, but not all, of participants' experiences. Emergent themes exposed both the ways in which the initial frame was insufficient and the importance of identity in how clinicians came to conceptualize cultural humility and incorporate it into their practice. Implications include the need for education and agencies to adapt and acknowledge that advocacy is a part of students' training and clinicians' work. Agencies and educational systems need to listen to students, staff, and clinicians of color to address their unique training needs and to find ways to best support them. Teaching implications include normalizing the process of White racial identity development and considering training in affinity spaces to address the differing needs of clinicians of color. Practice implications include the importance of an ongoing analysis of power, particularly for White clinicians.
